Elimination Controversy

In week four of the show contestants Patrice Pike, Phil, and Zayra Alvarez would be the bottom three at the end of all the voting. All three performed the cover songs of their choice. Supernova deliberated and they stated all three of the contestants gave good performances. Despite being complimented by host Dave Navarro for his song selection of "Smoking Umbrellas" by Failure, Phil was chosen to be the one sent home due to Supernova being unsure of whether he really wanted to be in the band. Essentially his elimination was due to statements that Phil had made to the press that he was primarily in the competition to get free publicity for himself and his band, and was not "stoked" about the music Supernova was creating; [ [http://www.delmarvanow.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060707/LIFESTYLE/607070304/1024/ "The Daily Times Article"] Alex Muller, Making the cut Local rocker Phil Ritchie competes on CBS reality show The Daily Times, July 7, 2006] while it was cut from the aired show, live attendees at the taping reported that Dave Navarro read from Phil's hometown newspaper of The Daily Times. On the following days Dave Navarro confirmed the reason's for Phil's exit on his MySpace and [http://www.6767.com/ personal website's] blogs as a "question of his commitment", rehashing the words read aloud from the article. He also commented on Phil's overall performance and the rumors of scandal from this results show. Dave commented that Phil's weekly performances were too similar and he didn't seem to heed the advice to change it up, as opposed to Zayra.

To Phil's credit, he did not deny the article in question and owned up to the moment with his charm, even joking at one moment. When Dave Navarro said watch what you say to the press, they can misquote you and make things up, Phil joked along saying the statement was made up. The decision to eliminate him that night did not come easy for the show's producer and drummer for Supernova, Tommy Lee who had been a fan of Phil from the beginning. Lee commented on upon hearing this news about Phil not being into the music of Supernova, he said it had broken his heart.
