Kalpaki

Kalpaki (Greek, Modern: Καλπάκι), older forms: -o and -on is a municipality in the Ioannina Prefecture, Greece, about 30 km (20 miles) northwest of Ioannina, southwest of Konitsa and Kastoria, west-southwest of Kozani and east of Kakavia and Delvinaki. Population 2,324 (2001). Kalpaki is connected with the GR-20 linking Ioannina and Konitsa, Kastoria and Kozani which is not the main road for Kozani since 2005.

Population

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, the population steadily declined as residents moved to larger towns and cities and the richest countries in the world.

History

Kalpaki did not join Greece until the Balkan Wars of 1913. Its economy slowly improved after the end of the Turkish rule over Epirus.

Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s.

Kalpaki has a few schools, a lyceum (middle school), a gymnasium (secondary school) a few churches, banks, a post office, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest hospital and university are in the city of Ioannina.
