Hwang Suk-young

Hwang Sok-yong (born January 4 1943) is a South Korean novelist. He was born in Xinjing, Manchuria during the period of Japanese rule. His family returned to Korea after liberation in 1945. He later obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Dongguk University.

Hwang's novels include "The Guest", "The Garden of Yesterday", "Monsieur Han", "The Shadow of Arms", a translation of "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Janggilsan" and numerous other novels. He has won the Daesan Prize (in 2001) and the Manhae Prize for Literature (in 1989).

In 1993, Hwang was sentenced to 7 years in prison for an unauthorized visit to North Korea. After 5 years, he was freed by presidential pardon from Kim Dae Jung in 1998.
