Gangbuk-gu (lit. River-north gu) is one of the 25 "gu" which make up the city of Seoul, South Korea. Its name is derived from the fact that it is located at the north of Han river. It was created from neighbouring "Dobong-gu" (도봉구) in 1995. The current mayor is Hyun Pung Kim (김현풍).

Should be careful of speaking a mountain name in Gangbuk district office! Do not tell a big mountain located at the nearby this office as "Bukhansan" in this office! In this office, most office workers don't like "Bukhansan" because of what they think Bukhansan is the remained of Japanese occupation during the first half of 20th century. They like the name of this mountain, "Samgaksan."
