August 28 ,1971 ) is a Frenchcomics artist andcomic book creator .Biography
Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of
Franco-Belgian comics . Many of his comics were published byL'Association which was founded in 1990 byJean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g.David B. andLewis Trondheim . The "Donjon" series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.cite web| last =Lambiek Comiclopedia | title =Joann Sfar | url =http://www.lambiek.net/artists/s/sfar.htm ]As the son of
Jew ish parents (anAshkenazi mother and aSephardic father) some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage. He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his "Professeur Bell" series (loosely based onJoseph Bell ), whereas "Le chat du rabbin" is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. "Les olives noires" is a series about a Jewish child inPalestine at the time ofJesus . Like "Le chat du rabbin", the series contains a lot of historical and theological information. His main influences are Fred and
André Franquin as well asMarc Chagall ,Chaim Soutine ,Will Eisner ,Hugo Pratt andJohn Buscema .cite web | last = Bellefroid | first =Thierry | publisher = BDParadisio | title =Interview de Joann Sfar | url = http://www.bdparadisio.com/Intervw/sfar/intsfar.htm fr_icon] cite web | last = Balaresque | first = Nicolas | publisher = Parutions.com | title =Entretien avec Joann Sfar | url = http://www.parutions.com/pages/1-16-76-2367.html fr_icon]Partial bibliography
