Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics

The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC-HIA) is the leading Canadian centre for astronomy and astrophysics.

Named for the Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg, it was formed in 1975 as part of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. NRC-HIA headquarters was moved to Victoria, BC in 1995 to the site of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.

NRC-HIA also operates the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory outside of Penticton, BC and the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre as well as managing Canadian involvement in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, in the Gemini Observatory, in the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and in the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (under construction).

The institute is also involved in the development and construction of instruments and telescopes.
