Lichada

Lichada or Lihada (Greek, Modern: Λιχάδα), older forms: Lichas or Lihas is a community in Euboea, Greece. Its 2001 population was 240 for the village and 1,140 for the community. Lichada is located northwest of Chalkida, west of Istiea and Aidipsos. The GR-77 (Schimatari - Chalkida - Istiea) The village is across the mainland which includes the Fthiotis prefecture. It views the North Evian Gulf, the Evian Gulf and the Malian Gulf to the west.

Population

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, the population steadily declined as residents moved to larger towns and cities and the richest countries in the world. its largest decline which recorded as one of the most in the prefecture as between the 1981 and the 1991 census.

History

Lichada did not join Greece until the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and was a victorious battle and ended the Ottoman rule.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, several houses were rebuilt.

Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s. Many of these houses are abandoned.

Lichada was struck by a forest fire in the afternoon hours of Monday July 16, 2007 and consumed about 10 square kilometres of land in the mountains. The fire started at around 1 PM (13:00) local time and ended during the night time hours. It took several fire trucks, helicopters and planes to put out the fire. The blaze occurred two hours before another one was sparked for several hours in Ymittos on the mainland 10 km east of the Greek capital of Athens. Several houses and properties were damaged and residents were homeless, several were watching the dangerous blaze.

Lichada also has a communications tower that receives television and radio to northern Euboea and the Phthiotis prefecture including Lamia. Channels include:

Other

Lichada has a school, a lyceum (middle school), a few churches, banks, a post office, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest gymnasium (high school) is in Istiea.
