sea bass of the subfamily "Anthiinae " of the family "Serranidae ", found in the easternIndian Ocean , and southernPacific Ocean includingAustralia andNew Zealand , at depths of up to 220 m. Its length is up to 50 cm.The pink maomao is a fairly large sea bass with a narrow elongate body and a deeply forked tail. The
pectoral fin s are very long, and assist in manoeuvering in open water to capture theplanktonic animals on which they feed.Coloration is an almost uniform glowing pink, some larger individuals having a black splotch on the upper flanks and a scattering of yellow-orange markings on the body and fins.
They make excellent eating.
