The Government Engineering College Barton Hill, Trivandrum (short names: GEC, GECB) (Entrance Commissioner's Code: TRV) was started by the Government Of Kerala in August 1999. The Institution is located in Barton Hill, which is two kilometres from the city centre in Trivandrum. It was started in order to have a centre of excellence to focus on the latest in Technology, and to augment the demand for Engineering education in Kerala. The institute has four major departments viz. Electronics and Communication, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The college, now in the eighth academic year, since its inception, has already established itself as one of the leading Engineering Colleges in Kerala. Courses and Curricula

GEC Barton Hill presently offers four B.Tech. courses in the streams of Mechanical Engineering(ME), Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE),Electrical & Electronics Engineering(EEE)and Information Technology (IT) each with an intake of 66 regular students and six lateral entry students per year.The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala and follows its curricula and syllabi. Mechanical Engineering

---- The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been the heart and spirit of this premier institution right from its inception.The Department of Mechanical Engineering is headed by a learned and experienced faculty, who with their rich experience in industry are able to enlighten the students about the latest trends and practical aspects of engineering.The department believes in the creation of engineers comfortable with a broad spectrum of technologies.The department has continuously produced the finest set of vibrant and proactive engineering. Apart from the Mechanical Workshop, the college has a good Metrology Lab and Heat and Mass Transfer Lab and a high tech CAD Lab . To assist in intra disciplinary studies the institution has a full fledged Electrical Lab too. [http://www.gecbh.ac.in/mech_labs.html]

The college is also setting up a full fledged Engines, Hydraulics and Material Testing lab.

The new Mechanical Engineering block is fast nearing completion. Some classes have already commenced in the new block

Information Technology

This engineering college provides the best in IT education under Kerala University. Electronics & Communication Engineering

The department gives exposure to its students, to not only the regular Engineering curriculum but also to the aspirations of today's corporate world, by inculcating a professional attitude in them. The labs, with latest facilities and unlimited Internet facility, give the students a cutting edge in technical exploration and enhance their information search and analytical skills. The course not only gives them a chance to understand and explore their area of interest, but it will be an important aspect in their contribution to the company they would join after the degree. Students are encouraged to join various technical and non-technical forums, which in turn gives them horizontal exposure to Engineering concepts and technology. Electrical & Electronics Engineering

The department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering was started in the year 2007 with an intake of 60 students. At present, there are 66 seats available. Admissions and Fees

Hundred percent of the admissions are based exclusively on merit and done through the Centralized admission Procedure (CAP) of the Government of Kerala. Top rank holders of the [http://www.cee-kerala.org Common Entrance Examination (CEE)] conducted by Government of Kerala opt for this college. Faculty

The faculty members are from the pool of Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers under the Department of Technical Education, who are arguably the best in the state. It is the same pool which provides the faculty to all the nine Government Engineering Colleges in the state. The 50 strong faculty team of the college consists of 7 PhD holders and 28 PG degree holders. The faculty to student ratio in GEC Barton Hill is 1 : 15, which is better than the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) stipulations. This, along with the advantage of being a relatively small college, ensures that every student receives personal attention from the faculty. Campus

The campus, situated in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city, is hardly a kilometre from PMG junction, is located beside the Government Law College, Trivandrum. This makes GEC Barton Hill one of the most easily accessible engineering colleges in the state. Housed in what was once the Government Girls High School Barton Hill, the college can boast of an architecture which is reminiscent of the erstwhile kingdom of Thiruvithaamkoor.

Library

The central library of the college houses more than 8000 books and periodicals including several reputed international journals and magazines. The process of fully computerizing the library, undertaken as a joint venture by the library and the IT department of the college using only free software has been completed. The campus also has a limited subscription to the on-line journals from IEEE. The project is also underway to gain full subscription to many more prestigious international publications including those from IEEE and ASME. Being centrally placed, the students of the college can also conveniently make use of the knowledge wealth of the excellent libraries like the University Library, the Public Library and the British Council Library, all of which are at a walking distance from the campus. Connectivity

There is sufficient Internet connectivity available to each department and accessible to every student. Three separate links of 128, 512 and 544 kbit/s connect the campus to the information web. Parent Teacher Association

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the college is a very active body, deeply concerned with the smooth functioning and development of the college. Apart from providing many important amenities to the students including the canteen and the Internet connectivity, the PTA also funds and organizes various training programs to develop the soft skills of the students. The PTA also gives scholarships to financially deprived students and awards to proficient students. The most outstanding recent contribution of the PTA to the college is a new building with two spacious classrooms

Building Construction

Presently the college is housed in the old school buildings. The construction of the eight storied main block is moving at a fast pace and already construction of the Mechanical Lab Complex is complete. Only the furnishing work is left to be completed.
