Triangle Television is a television station in Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand.

tructure

It is a not-for-profit trust which runs the public service, non-commercial and Government-owned UHF channel for the Auckland and Wellington regions. It started broadcasting in Auckland on 1 August, 1998 and in Wellington on 25 August, 2006.

Broadcast technology

Triangle TV broadcasts via three transmitters in Auckland (Waiatarua, Pine Hill and Remuera) and three transmitters in Wellington (Kaukau, Fitzherbert and Baxter's Knob).

The Wellington station is run from Auckland using an IP link provided by broadcast services company Kordia. It has much programming in common with Auckland. Triangle Wellington is also available on Channel 50 on the TelstraClear cable networks in Wellington and Christchurch.

Programming

It broadcasts programs in many different languages as it is run as a public station. This means anyone can make a program for them. It is a popular service for ethnic and faith communities in the city who can't see their own programmes or hear their own languages anywhere else on New Zealand television.

The station acts independently from all program providers. According to Triangle Television, this independence ensures Triangle Television 'cannot be controlled by individuals or groups with their own agendas' [http://www.tritv.co.nz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=27]

Time slots are sold on a first come first served basis and the station offers editorial freedom on content. Other content includes a large selection of news, current affairs and documentaries from Australian Channel 31 producers and public service stations such as DW-TV, TV5 Monde, BVN, AlJazeera English, TGN, Duna TV, Russia Today, NHK World, ERT World, Australia Network, VOA and CQTV.

atellite Transmission

Triangle TV started in October 2007 a satellite service called Stratos available on Freeview and Sky TV via Optus D1. It is also available via TelstraClear Cable in Wellington and Christchurch.It focuses on re-broadcasting programmes from regional television stations in New Zealand, and a similar mixture of satellite station re-transmission as Triangle TV. Stratos has broadcast SKY Sport 1's live coverage of the 2nd and 3rd test of the 2008 New Zealand vs England cricket test series.
