"Slattery's People" was a
1964 -1965 Americantelevision series about local politics that starredRichard Crenna as the title character James Slattery, co-starredEd Asner andTol Avery , and featuredCarroll O'Connor andWarren Oates for a couple of episodes each. Crenna had earlier appeared in several television series, including "The Real McCoys " oppositeWalter Brennan , and went on to playRambo 's commander in the 1980s movies, while Asner later played Lou Grant both on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show " and "Lou Grant", one of the few times a leading character went from a half-hour comedy to an hour-long drama, and the only time this was done with the character being played by the same actor. "Slattery's People" is mainly notable for having been one of the extremely rare American television series spotlighting the travails of local politicians, a topic that TV shows of the period mainly avoided.External links
