East Memphis, Memphis

East Memphis is a rough region of Memphis, Tennessee, with a few knownlyneighborhoods such as White Station and Sherwood Forest and with the following general neighborhood borders:

On the West: Midtown (which is defined usually either as west of either Hollywood or E. Parkway)On The South: Hickory Hill, Orange Mound (usually Park Ave. is given as a boundary west of Getwell, and Rhodes-Quince east of Getwell)On the East: Germantown, Cordova (Germantown is its own town, Cordova is administratively part of Memphis proper)On the North: Bartlett (although Cordova shields East Memphis from Bartlett), the Covington Pike region. Boundary usually thought of as I-40 or around it.

Region

East Memphis is largely a commercial and residential powerhouse. Poplar Ave. provides the central east-west thoroughfare of the area, and there are many thriving businesses on and around it. East Memphis is the location of the some of the largest Memphis homes, specifically those in the Walnut Grove area. It is also home to the looming Clark Tower, as there are no legal restrictions on the height of buildings outside of the downtown area. The area also has developed into a home for many businesses and law firms. East Memphis is also home to world-famous "Corky's Barbecue". Walnut Grove Rd. has a high concentration of churches. Highland St. is mostly commercial, with a smattering of high-rise, low-income residential buildings, as well as Crichton College. The University of Memphis sits south of Central Ave. and north of Southern Ave, with the Highland strip bordering it on its western side. Further down Poplar Ave., the "Oak Court Mall", which has been a shopping mainstay in the area since 1987, can be found.

Restaurants

The East Memphis area is host to a plethora of fine dining locations, ranging from the relatively inexpensive yet award winning Huey's, to the finest and most expensive steakhouse in town, Folk's Folly, both owned by the locally renowned Thomas Boggs.

The Highland Strip (Highland St. between Midland and Southern) is home to several bars, and is the main center of entertainment in the area surrounding the University of Memphis. R.P. Tracks, just off Highland on Walker, has been a mainstay for college students, professors, and neighborhood locals for many years.
