December 19 ,1884 –November 13 ,1957 ) wasPrime Minister ofCzechoslovakia from 1948 to 1953 andPresident of Czechoslovakia from 1953 to 1957.He was born in Zákolany, near
Kladno ,Bohemia (then inAustria-Hungary , now in theCzech Republic ). His father wasLadislav Zápotocký , one of the founders of theCzech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD), together withJosef Boleslav Pecka-Strahovský andJosef Hybeš .He was a delegate of the Left Wing of the ČSSD to the Second
Comintern Congress, held in Petrograd,July 19 –August 7 ,1920 . Together withBohumír Šmeral , he co-founded theCommunist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ) when it broke away from the ČSSD in 1921. He wasGeneral Secretary of the KSČ from 1922 to 1925. In 1940, he was sent toSachsenhausen concentration camp , in which he became a Kapo. June 15 ,1948 , replacingKlement Gottwald , who became President. OnMarch 14 ,1953 , shortly after his return fromStalin 's funeral, Gottwald died, and was succeeded as President by his Prime Minister. Zápotocký stayed in office till his death inPrague in 1957.ee also
