The 8th Congressional District of Illinois covers the northern suburbs of Chicago, including portions of Lake, McHenry and Cook counties. It has been represented by Democrat Melissa Bean since 2005.

From 1969 to 2005, it was represented by the longest-serving Republican member of the House, Phil Crane. Before Crane, the district was represented by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (1963-1969). The district has historically voted solidly Republican, though it has become more contested over time. In 2000, 55% of voters in the district voted for Republican Presidential candidate George W. Bush. [ [http://www.ourcongress.org/race/il08 ourcongress.org] ] The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index score of R +5.
