He also served as chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) from 1999-2005.

Erlandson ran for Sabo's 5th Congressional District seat in 2006, but finished second in a contested primary to Keith Ellison. Ellison went on to win in November.[1]

During his leadership of the DFL Party and prior to joining SuperValu, Erlandson hosted a radio show on Air American Minnesota called "The Mike Erlandson Show," and was a regular on local public affairs programs.
