Thomas Francis Murphy

Thomas Francis Murphy (December 3, 1905October 26, 1995) was a federal prosecutor and judge in New York City.

Murphy was born in New York. He attended Georgetown University and Fordham Law School, from which he graduated in 1930. From 1942 to 1950, Murphy served as an Assistant United States Attorney or federal prosecutor in Manhattan and was best known as the prosecutor in the two perjury trials of Alger Hiss. In 1950-51, Murphy served briefly as Commissioner of the New York City Police Department.

In 1951, President Harry S Truman nominated Murphy to serve as a District Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Murphy served as an active judge until 1970, when he took senior status.
