Fomivirsen (brand name Vitravene) is an antiviral drug. It is used in the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMV) in immunocompromised patients, including those with AIDS.

It is an oligonucleotide that blocks translation of viral mRNA by binding to a coding segment of a key CMV gene. It was the first antisense antiviral approved by the FDA. [Roush, W. 1997. Antisense aims for a renaissance. Science 276: 1192-93]

It is 21 nucleotides in length and has the sequence: 5'-GCG TTT GCT CTT CTT CTT GCG-3'
