followed_by ="Sexual Ecology: AIDS and the Destiny of Gay Men" is a book by
Gabriel Rotello written in his days as a gay activist. Rotello makes the point that the large number of sexual partners available to members of the "gay fast lane " created an ecological niche which allowed the rapid early spread ofAIDS .:"NIH researcher June Osborne notes that the NIH was repeatedly forced to redefine "multiple sex partners" for big-city gay males during the 1970's -- from 10-20 a year in 1975 to 50 a year in 1976 to 100 a year in 1978, and finally to an astounding 500 a year in 1980. "I am duly in awe," she said (quoted, Rotello, 1997, pp. 62-63)."
