The Sucre Municipality is one of the 21 municipalities (municipios) that makes up the Venezuelan state of Miranda and, according to a 2007 population estimate by the National Institute of Statistics of Venezuela, the municipality has a population of 640,762. History

The Sucre Municipality comprises the metropolitan area of Caracas; Petare is the seat of the municipality and it was founded on February 17, 1621, under the name of "Jesús de Petare". Located at 844 meters above sea level, to the east of the valley of Caracas, in a hill that dominates the course of the Guaire river, Petare in the native language means "Face to the river".

Demographics

The Sucre Municipality, according to a 2007 population estimate by the National Institute of Statistics of Venezuela, has a population of 640,762 (up from 591,414 in 2000). This amounts to 2.2% of the state's population. Government

The mayor of the Sucre Municipality is José Vicente Rangel Ávalos (son of former Venezuelan vice-president José Vicente Rangel Vale), re-elected on October 31, 2004 with 51% of the vote.
