Edmund Lynch was born on May 19, 1885 in
Baltimore, Maryland to Richard Lynch and Jennie Vernon Smith Lynch. Edmund Calvert Lynch attended theBoys' Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore and graduated fromJohns Hopkins University in 1907. Lynch met Merrill while trying to find a place to live in
New York City in 1907. Lynch joined Merrill's firm in 1914, four months after Merrill had founded the company. In 1915, the company changed names from Charles E. Merrill Company to Merrill, Lynch and Company.
