Edmund C. Lynch

Edmund Calvert Lynch (May 19, 1885 – May 12, 1938) and his friend, Charles E. Merrill, formed Merrill Lynch on October 15, 1915.

Early Years

Edmund Lynch was born on May 19, 1885 in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard Lynch and Jennie Vernon Smith Lynch. Edmund Calvert Lynch attended the Boys' Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1907. Merrill and Lynch

Lynch met Merrill while trying to find a place to live in New York City in 1907. Lynch joined Merrill's firm in 1914, four months after Merrill had founded the company. In 1915, the company changed names from Charles E. Merrill Company to Merrill, Lynch and Company. In 1924, he married Signa Fornaris with whom he had three children, Vernon, Edmund Calvert Jr. (who later joined his father's firm [ [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9501E5D9103EF933A15756C0A9659C8B63 Paid Notice] ] ) and Signa Janney.

Death and Legacy

He died in London England while on business, on May 12, 1938. [New York Times, May 14, 1938.]

Upon his death, he bequethed $50,000 to Johns Hopkins medical school in the name of his brother. [New York Times, May 26, 1938]
