- Jacques Brunel
Jacques Brunel ("d." 1564) was a French organist and composer. He was organist at
Rouen Cathedral until at least 1524, and later from 1532 until 1564 he was organist at theEste chapel inFerrara , where he served underCipriano de Rore . He was probably also in charge of the Este chapels atModena andReggio nell'Emilia . It is possible that he was related toAntoine Brumel who was in Ferrara from 1506-1510. Brunel was considered by contemporaries to be a brilliant organist.Cosimo Bartoli wrote that "he plays with more grace, with more art and more musically than any other, whoever he may be." [Hudson] Anthony Newcomb believes that he is the composer of a number of ricercars from the Bourdeney Codex, which would mean he was a great innovator in that genre.References
