Chastity Claire "C.C." Babcock is a fictional character on the sitcom "The Nanny". She was played by actress Lauren Lane.

Background

C.C. is the business partner of Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield (played by Charles Shaughnessy), working together with him for almost 20 years. C.C. is typically portrayed as egocentric, mean-spirited, tactless and uncaring, particularly shown in how she never remembers the names of Maxwell's children.

C.C.'s main opponent is Niles (played by Daniel Davis), the Sheffields' butler. He has despised her from the start, and frequently makes quips at her expense. One of C.C.'s character traits is that she is perennially unlucky in romance, which deteriorated so far that the bartender at the local singles bar knows her by name, and that she tries online dating (which fails when her "man" is revealed to be Maxwell's son Brighton). Due to her lack of boyfriends and fixation on Maxwell, there are hints that C.C. is depressed and spends a fortune on therapy sessions. Her parents are divorced, although her father Stewart is portrayed as amiable. When Fran Fine (played by show creator Fran Drescher) comes to work as the new nanny, C.C. immediately views her as a threat to Maxwell's affection. She always refers to Fran as "Nanny Fine", even after Fran is wed to Maxwell and becomes the new lady of the house. C.C.'s Pomeranian dog, Chester, adores Fran, but growls whenever C.C. is near.

C.C. takes pride and enjoyment in creating situations of conflict in the household and so in the show is always referred to as being cold-hearted and being seen as the villainess. In her first appearance, whilst they were at a party to get backers for his new play, C.C. noticed Fran coming down the staircase in a lovely red dress, and she asked, distastefully, "What's that?!", and Maxwell's slightly stunned reply was, "That's the Nanny!"

As Fran and her large family integrate themselves into the Sheffield household, C.C. continues her vain attempts to win Maxwell over and eject Fran from the house. Although Fran is somewhat sympathetic and tends to tolerate C.C., their relationship remains strained throughout the show's run. When C.C. purposefully hurts the feelings of Gracie (played by Madeline Zima) by telling her that Fran only spends time with her because Fran is paid to do so, Fran warns, "...if you ever hurt one of my kids again, they'll be wiping your blue blood off the walls!"

During the final season of the show, the hate between Niles and C.C. reaches its zenith; during an argument, their mutual rage turns to lust, and they suddenly start kissing each other passionately. Later, Niles finds that he can no longer effortlessly insult C.C. like he used to, and accidentally blurts out a marriage proposal. Once he is turned down, Niles proposes again several times, only to be rejected and mocked at each attempt. This situation becomes so intolerable that both C.C. and Niles declare they are terminating their employment with the Sheffield house and Maxwell's business, respectively. However, before Maxwell and Fran are able to talk them out of this decision, they stumble on Niles and C.C. in bed together.

C.C. and Niles marry in the series finale, as Fran is giving birth to twins. After they're being pronounced man and wife, C.C. learns that she is pregnant with Niles' baby, which causes both of them to faint. During the wedding ceremony, it is revealed that "C.C." stands for "Chastity Claire," which shocks everyone there.

She, along with Niles, accompanies the family to California.
