Jakko Jan Leeuwangh (born
September 9 ,1972 inAlkmaar ) is a former speed skater from theNetherlands . He finished fourth in the 1998 Olympic 1,000 m event. The highlight of his career was riding a world record at the 1,500 meters, in 2000 in Calgary. At that time, when he was coached by Peter Mueller, Leeuwangh skated 1.45,56, improvingÅdne Søndrål s world record of 1.46,43. It took more than a year before the KoreanKyu-Hyouk Lee beat Leeuwangh’s time.Due to being ill withmononucleosis he was not able to qualify for the2002 Winter Olympics . After failing to qualify for the 2003 World Championship sprint, he announced his retirement from top speed skating.Currently Leeuwangh is an assistant-coach of
Jac Orie at thePostcodeLoterij Speedskating Team . Leeuwangh's main task is to train the skaters who do not qualify for the big speedskating events.Personal Records
