Becky Garcia (born
13 September 1983 ) is aflyweight female boxing prospect fromMesa, Arizona . Her nickname is "La Guerrera" ("The Warrior"). Her father is Mexican, her mother is German.Garcia's father did not approve at first of her daughter's selection of
boxing as a career, as he considered boxing to be a manly sport.Garcia fought 19 bouts as an amateur before deciding to become a professional boxer. She was undefeated as an amateur, but her main reasons for turning professional were the lack of important international amateur tournaments in women's boxing and that women's boxing would not be accepted as an Olympic sport officially until the 2012 games. She spoke about those being the two main reasons not to continue in amateur boxing during a press conference held two days before her first fight as a professional.
Garcia signed with
Bob Arum 's "Top Rank" enterprise, and onDecember 5 ,2003 , she debuted with a four round split-decision win overElizabeth Mongue in Phoenix.On
March 26 ,2004 she scored a first round knockout againstEugina Abel in 21 seconds.Less than three months later on 06/18/04, she knocked out
Veronica Gonzalez in the first round.Her next bout was more than a year later against
Patricia Stickler . Garcia's win also added another first round knockout to her streak.She then won by unanimous decision against newcomer
