Schlitterbahn Vacation Village is a resort complex scheduled to open in summer 2009 in Kansas City, Kansas. It was announced in September 2005 by Schlitterbahn Waterparks. The convert|370|acre|km2|1|sing=on, $750 million development will include a nearly 40 acre waterpark, which will be Schlitterbahn's fourth waterpark and its first outside of the state of Texas. (In comparison, Oceans of Fun in Kansas City, Missouri occupies 60 acres.) The project will also include 1,500 guest rooms (including a hotel, cabins and a "Treehaus Resort"), convert|750000|sqft|m2|-3 of retail space, a ¾ mile covered river walk, and the "Transportainment River System," which transports visitors around the resort via a manmade river. Groundbreaking took place September 18, 2007 on the land currently occupied by the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds and the Unified Government courthouse annex, across Interstate 435 from the Kansas Speedway and Village West. When the complex opens in 2009 it will include the first phase of the waterpark, an indoor skydiving attraction, some lodging, shops and restaurants, and the river walk. When completed in summer 2011, it will be the largest entertainment project in Kansas history.
