Antonio Tamburini (
March 28 ,1800 -November 8 ,1876 ) was an Italianbaritone . Born inFaenza , then part of thePapal States , Tamburini studied the horn with his father and voice with Aldobrando Rossi before making his debut aged 18 in "La contessa di colle erbose" (Generali). He went on to become one of the finest baritones of his age. He had a beautiful, flexible voice that can be seen in the music written for him. He was renowned at the time also for his good looks and terrific stage presence, often working with the tenorGiovanni Battista Rubini and sopranoGiulia Grisi . He is most famous for his association withBellini - he was one of the "Puritani Quartet", along with Grisi, Rubini and bassLuigi Lablache . They were reunited, albeit withGiovanni Mario replacing Rubini, at the premiere ofDonizetti 's "Don Pasquale ".He was married to the
contralto Marietta Gioia-Tamburini , who he often sang alongside.He died at Nice in 1876.
