"McHale's Navy" is a 1997 military comedy film starring Tom Arnold as the son of Lieutenant Commander Quintin McHale, known by the same name (retired). The movie is based on the television series.

In the film, the former Lt. Commander McHale has been promoted to Admiral and now works in The Pentagon. His son, also retired from the Navy, is called back to duty after the (fictional) island of San Marino becomes headquarters for the international terrorist, Major Vladikov. It is not until the end of the movie that Cobra is revealed to be the original McHale from the television series.

ynopsis

Major Vladikov wants to build and launch a gigantic missile to supposedly destroy the Pentagon, where the President of the United States and 27 other heads of state will be meeting. He is also obsessed with becoming the most renowned terrorist in the world. LCDR McHale is brought out of retirement, to the displeasure of CAPT Binghampton, to lead an operation against Major Vladikov. He and his crew sneak onto the terrorist's base, and Ensign Parker accidentally breaks (and steals) the detonator for the missile. After Binghampton accidentally blows up the base (with a flare gun) McHale and his crew board his PT boat to find and kill Vladikov, which they eventually do.

Notes

* The fictional local is on a remote Caribbean island (fictional).
* According to McHale had promised his dying friend that he would take care of his family only to find that he was related to nearly everyone on the island.
* It is only near the end of the film that we learn that McHale and the Admiral "Cobra" are father and son.
* A recurring joke in the movie, apparently Binghampton was sent there as base commander because on his last duty assignment he had accidentally sunk a cruise liner. He was dubbed "The Man Who Sank the Love Boat".
