Australia . The school opened in 1983. It attracts students primarily from Cairns and Kuranda. The school has about 1100 students. The current Principal is Bruce Moore.Houses
Smithfield State High School has four in-school sports 'houses'. These 'houses' are named after beaches in the Cairns area. The four houses are:
Clifton House: Clifton's House Colour is Green
Trinity House: Trinity's House Colour is Red
Kewarra House: Kewarra's House Colour is Black
Ellis House: Ellis House's Colour is Yellow
History
On 28 October 1998 an arson was committed at Smithfield State High School destroying a computer block and the school's radio station. The arson remains unsolved with a AU$50,000 award. The attack on Smithfield SHS was the biggest arson in the history of Education Queensland.
Innovation
Principal a.d. Larry Gallagher led the school to national fame by constantly expanding the school's excellence in technology. Smithfield State High School has partnerships with
NEC ,Microsoft ,HP and several other major companies. The school grounds are completely covered by a wirelessLAN network and all teachers are equipped with a PDA that facilitates roll marking, behaviour management and communication.The school has several IT rooms equipped with state of the art Windows computers, a film studio with a green screen and digital camcorders for student use, a performing arts theatre, video conferencing facilities and purpose built buildings for each department.Excellence
Smithfield State High School is one of eight recognized Centres of Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Technology in
Queensland .101.9 Coast FM
The school holds a 24/7 aspirant community broadcasting license and operates 101.9 Coast FM, a youth-orientated music program that is run by students with teacher supervision. The station was one of the most heard in the Cairns area from 2002 to 2004 with the help of the student DJs and station editor and IT teacher Jack Emuleus. Mr Warren Duxbury took over the running of the station in 2005. The current head of Coast FM, as of January 2007, is Sharon Clogan, who operates in the roles previously performed by Warren Duxbury.
