USS "John M. Howard" (IX-75), an
unclassified miscellaneous vessel , was the only ship of theUnited States Navy to be named forJohn Martin Howard . Her keel was laid down inCamden, New Jersey , in1934 as "Elsie Fenimore", and purchased from her owner,E. R. Fenimore Johnson , on2 July 1942 . She was placed in service atPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania , on29 July . Taken toWashington, DC , and renamed "John M. Howard" on17 August 1942 , she commissioned there1 September 1942 .During the war the ship was used for ordnance experiments, operating out of
Naval Ordnance Laboratory ,Washington, DC , toChesapeake Bay and various Atlantic coast ports. She decommissioned on9 May 1945 at theWashington Navy Yard and was placed in service until16 November 1945 . She was returned to theMaritime Commission for disposal24 January 1946 .References
