He was formerly the running backs coach for the NFL's Miami Dolphins and former head coach of the Michigan State Spartans football team from 2000 to 2002. During his tenure he compiled a 16-17 record. In his final season the team went 3-6, before he was fired mid-season after falling to the University of Michigan, by a score of 49-3. He was fired on November 4th, 2002. Williams is most noted for a press conference in which when asked, "Do you still have control of your team?", he simply responded with, "I don't know." He was immediately replaced by offensive coordinator Morris Watts, who went 1-2 as head coach. He has previously worked as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas, Eastern Michigan, and Ball State. He played football at Purdue. Following his stint at Michigan State, Williams spent time on staffs of the Detroit Lions and the LSU Tigers.

On January 18, 2008, Williams re-joined former coaching partner Nick Saban at the University of Alabama, becoming the football team's tight end and special teams coach.
