USS "Henry County" (IX-34), an
unclassified miscellaneous vessel , was the first ship of theUnited States Navy to be named for Henry County, which exists inAlabama , Georgia,Illinois ,Indiana ,Iowa ,Kentucky ,Ohio ,Tennessee , andVirginia .Her keel was laid down by the
American Ship Building Company , inCleveland, Ohio . She was commissioned atPortsmouth, Virginia , on27 May 1930 with CommanderBenjamin Vaughan McCandlish in command."Henry County" sailed for the West Coast on
12 July , transiting thePanama Canal on23 July and arriving inSan Diego, California , via Corinto,Nicaragua , on13 August . She decommissioned atMare Island, California , on22 August 1930 and was loaned to the State ofCalifornia that same day. She was renamed "California State" on23 January 1931 and was finally transferred to the Maritime Commission on30 June 1940 .References
