The Monumento ao Bombeiro or "Monument to a Fireman" is a monument located in the Belas freguesia (sub-municipality) of Sintra, Portugal[1]. It was designed and created by painter and sculptor Bottelho[2]. The monument was designed to honour the service and the sacrifice of several firemen who lost their lives in 1967 when attempting rescue efforts after heavy torrential downpours breached the banks of the Jamor River and caused heavy flooding. In addition to the firemen, many people lost their lives and there was extensive property damage.[3]

Dedicated to the Belas Volunteer Firefighters, the monument was officially dedicated on 24 November 2002 by the Secretary of State, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and other Portuguese politicians and dignitaries to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the tragedy.

A medal was edited officially to honour the Firefighters and the tragedy.
