Hattie Carthan

Hattie Carthan (1901-1984) was a community activist and environmentalist who was instrumental in improving the quality of life of the Brooklyn, New York community of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Carthan spearheaded a campaign to save a Magnolia grandiflora tree that was thriving far north of its natural habitat, and went on to found the Magnolia Tree Earth Center. [Magnolia Tree Earth Center website]

Hattie saved a hundred-year-old, forty-foot-high magnolia grandiflora tree by getting it designated an official city living landmark.
