Denethor I is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth. He was the tenth Ruling Steward of Gondor.

Denethor, son of Rían the younger sister of the previous Steward Dior, was born in 2375 and succeeded his uncle at his death in T.A. 2435. He inherited a generally peaceful realm. However, an end came to this in 2475 T.A. when Ithilien was suddenly attacked by fierce Orcs of a previously unknown kind: the Uruk-hai. Ithilien was temporarily lost and many of its people were slain or fled to other lands of Gondor. Osgiliath was also finally ruined in the fighting and its Great Bridge broken.

He had 3 children, two daughters and a son.

He was followed by Boromir, his only son, at his death in 2477 T.A.
