It was the first time Estonia participated in the contest, after Janika Sillamaa had failed to qualify from the East European final in 1993. The lyrics were written by Leelo Tungal, a well-known Estonian poet and writer of children's books. The composer was Ivar Must, the same man who composed "Everybody", Estonia's winning entry in 2001.
The song was performed tenth on the night, following Switzerland's Duilio with "Sto pregando" and preceding Romania's Dan Bittman with "Dincolo de nori". At the close of voting, it had received 2 points (both from Greece), placing 24th out of 25, in front of only Lithuania's first entry.
The song is sung from the perspective of a woman explaining herself to a lover. She likens herself to a wave in an extended metaphor, explaining that she will love him on her terms only.[1]
A cover version of this song (performed with a heavy metal backing[citation needed]) has been recorded by Tanel Padar.[2]
It was succeeded as Estonian representative at the 1996 Contest by Maarja-Liis Ilus & Ivo Linna with "Kaelakee hääl" (Estonia's poor result having disqualified them from the 1995 Contest).
