Johann Gottfried Steffan (
December 13 ,1815 inWädenswil /Switzerland –June 16 ,1905 inMunich /Germany ) was one of the most important Swiss landscapists of the 19th century.After his
apprenticeship as lithograph in his home town, Steffan travelled toMunich in 1833 in order to receive a further education. He there attended the Academy of Fine Arts underPeter von Cornelius . Under the influence ofCarl Rottmann , he turned to realisticLandscape art . Steffan's studio became the center of the Swiss artists in Munich. Together will numerous colleagues – among theseRudolf Koller –, he did several study trips to theSwiss Alps , especially to theCanton of Glarus and toLake Walen . Later, he quite frequently went toBerchtesgaden und to Ramsau where he found many of his motives. Steffan's paintings mostly are idealistic landscapes of theMunich School and often show mountain motives.Main works
