Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act

Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act

Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act was a federal bill in the United States, signed on January 2, 1974, that enacted the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Law. [http://tmip.fhwa.dot.gov/clearinghouse/docs/utp/ch8.stm] States had to agree to the limit if they desired to receive federal funding for highway repair. It was extended indefinitely on January 4, 1975. The law was modified in the late 1980s to allow 65 mph limits. In 1995, it was repealed, returning the power of setting speed limits to the states.
