Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Schwartz began his career at Montreal radio station CJFM-FM in 1976 as a disc jockey and newsreader.

He moved to Calgary in 1977 to work at CJAY-FM, at the time, the city's first progressive country rock radio station.

Howard then returned to Montreal in 1978 for another stint as a DJ at CJFM before making a career change to become a newscaster at CFCF-AM. While there he filed reports for CBS Radio and ABC's Good Morning America's newscasts.

In 1980 Howard moved over to television, working as a reporter and anchorman at CKVR-TV in Barrie, Ontario, where he eventually took over the principal anchor chair full time.

In 1982, he was hired at his hometown TV station in Montreal, CFCF-TV as a reporter and anchor. He took over the medical beat in 1990, producing two medical segments a week, while filling in as anchor Friday nights, on weekends and holidays.

Howard also appears in a number of motion pictures including "Oh Heavenly Dog", "Sunset Court" and "Criminal Law," among others. His work is listed under "Howard Schwartz 2" in the IMDB.

He also became a fixture on the PBS program "This week in Canada."

Howard left broadcasting in 1995 to open a media consulting and video production firm specializing in the pharmaceutical and medical academic fields. (Did you know he filled for bankruptcy before he moved to the United States ?) He moved to the US in 2001 where he works as a media relations specialist in New York.
