- Yoshikichi Furui
is a noted
Japanese author and translator.Furui was born in
Tokyo and educated at theUniversity of Tokyo , where he majored in German literature and spent his summers hiking in theJapanese Alps . His undergraduate thesis was onFranz Kafka .In 1970 Furui resigned as assistant professor of German literature at
Rikkyo University (Tokyo ) to become a fulltime writer. In 1971 his novella "Yoko" (杳子) was awarded theAkutagawa Prize , and he has subsequently won both theTanizaki Prize andKawabata Prize .Furui has also translated
