The Ravenna Festival is a summer festival of
opera and classical music (as well dance and jazz, ethnic music, drama, film, plus conventions and exhibitions) held in the city ofRavenna ,Italy and the surrounding area each July and August.It was founded in
1990 by Maria Christina Muti, the wife of the conductorRiccardo Muti who makes regular appearances there.Typically, about two dozen events are planned and opera programming has included less well-known operas by
Vincenzo Bellini andDonizetti as well as more popular works and visits by major companies such as theVienna State Opera and theMariinsky Theatre .Many performances take place in the 19th Century
Teatro Communale Alighieri , as well as the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare, the Basilica of San Vitale, and the Palazzo Mauro De Andrè.ee also
