Fukuoka-Kitakyūshū

Fukuoka-Kitakyūshū

is one name given to the area of land that is centered on the cities of Fukuoka and Kitakyushu in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. Usually these cities are referred to separately,but since they are close, their economic areas sometimes overlap. Transportation links tend to overlap in the region as well.

The whole region consists of 3 metropolitan regions:

* Fukuoka-Kurume-Saga within Greater Fukuoka (2.7 million)

* Kitakyushu-Shimonoseki (Greater Kitakyushu), often called the Kanmon area after the Kanmon Straits, with around 1.2-2.3 million. Estimates vary depending on definition.

* Metropolitan Iizuka area which some regard as a suburb of both Fukuoka or Kitakyushu with (220,000) people.

with sometimes:
* Metropolitan Shimonoseki (下関都市圏) may be considered a separate or integral part of Greater Kitakyushu/Kanmon (700,000), including Ube, Yamaguchi City.

Ōita, Sasebo, Kumamoto are never included in any above estimates, despite their relative proximity to Fukuoka and Kitakyushu.
