"Falling Away from Me" is a song written and recorded by American rock band Korn for their fourth studio album, "Issues". It was released as the album's first single in October 1999, where it appeared in an episode of Comedy Central's animated series, "South Park", entitled "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery". The song went on to become one of Korn's most popular singles, with an anti-domestic abuse themed video topping MTV's "Total Request Live" for ten days.

Concept

Chart performance

The song garnered massive radio attention during its initial release, becoming the first Korn single to chart on "Billboard"'s Hot 100, albeit at a dismal number 99.Cite web|url=http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/retrieve_chart_history.do?model.chartFormatGroupName=Singles&model.vnuArtistId=121196&model.vnuAlbumId=828526|title=Artist Chart History|accessdate=2008-03-21|publisher=Billboard] It also registered peak positions of number 7 on both the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks. The music video enjoyed similar success to its predecessor, "Freak on a Leash", debuting on MTV's "Total Request Live" at number 3, [Cite web|url=http://www.atrl.net/trlarchive/?s=debuts|title=Debuts|accessdate=2008-03-21|publisher=The TRL Archive] and reaching number 1 on its seventh day.Cite web|url=http://www.atrl.net/trlarchive/?s=recap&y=1999&m=11|title=Recap - November 1999|accessdate=2008-03-21|publisher=The TRL Archive] It would eventually become Korn's third "retired" video on the program, [Cite web|url=http://www.atrl.net/trlarchive/?s=halloffame|title=Hall of Fame|accessdate=2008-03-21|publisher=The TRL Archive] with ten non-consecutive days at number 1. Music video

The video, which received its world premiere on MTV in November 1999 during Spankin' New Music Week, was directed by Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst. It begins as a continuation of the famous video for "Freak on a Leash", starting with its closing animation. The video shows a young woman clearly distraught by an abuser (her father) and her eventually leaving the house in the middle of the night, with cut-aways to Korn performing in a room full of hanging light bulbs.

MTV Unplugged rendition

Korn performed a memorable version of "Falling Away from Me" for the filming of "" in December 2006, featuring hand bells and a glass harmonica. Cover versions

The song was played live on Jonathan Davis' "Alone I Play Tour" in 2007. [Cite web|url=http://www.kornspace.com/main/news.php?item.1354|title="Alone I Play" Limited Edition CD/DVD|date=2007-11-15|accessdate=2008-03-21|publisher=Kornspace]

Appearances in media

The song was first played on Comedy Central's animated series, "South Park", in the episode Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery. [Cite web|url=http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1430968/19991011/korn.jhtml|title=Korn To Premiere New Track During "South Park" Special|date=1999-10-11|accessdate=2008-03-21|publisher=MTV News] The band members had a primary role in the "Scooby-Doo"-esque plot but only performed the song right at the end of the episode. It should also be noted that the song was played starting half way through, completely missing out the introduction, and instead, starting from Jonathan Davis shouting and continuing from there.
