Three years later in 2003 Murphy was a member of the Cork intermediate team that won both Munster and All-Ireland medals at intermediate level. It was on this team that he came to the attention of the senior selectors and he made his senior debut in 2004. That year Cork lost a thrilling Munster final to Waterford, however, in spite of this Murphy later won his first All-Ireland medal as Cork defeated Kilkenny in the championship decider. His performance throughout the entire championship earned Murphy the Young Hurler of the Year award. In 2005 Murphy won his first Munster title at senior level following a defeat of Tipperary. Murphy later added a second All-Ireland medal to his collection following a victory over Galway in the final. He won a second consecutive Munser title in 2006, however, Cork were denied a third All-Ireland title in-a-row by arch-rivals Kilkenny. In spite of this Murphy was still presented with a coveted All-Star award. Since that defeat he has retained his corner-back position on the Cork team.
