Gustavo Gorriti

Gustavo Gorriti

Gustavo Gorriti is a Latin American journalist who has worked extensively on coverage pertaining to the politics, culture, and social issues of Central and South America, and the Caribbean. He is the winner of numerous prizes, including the CPJ International Press Freedom Award, and he has been recognized as a survivor of both government and criminal intimidation and targeting.

Gorriti first distinguished himself in his native Peru, where he covered the internal conflict led by the communist group known as Sendero Luminoso, working for the news magazine "Caretas". Later he would write a history of the conflict, "The Shining Path: A History of the Millenarian War in Peru", published by the University of North Carolina Press.

In 1992, Gorriti was abducted by members of the Peruvian Army. His illegal detention is one of the crimes that Alberto Fujimori is currently on trial for.

Gorriti has also been a frequent contributor to U.S. and international publications including the "The New York Times" and "Los Angeles Times", and has given many interviews on international broadcasts since the mid-1990s.
