North America 's largest retailer of prescription eyewear, as well as non-prescriptionsunglasses . LensCrafters was formed in1983 and has subsequently expanded to over 850 stores inCanada , theUnited States , andPuerto Rico . The stores usually feature independentoptometrist s on-site (or in adjacent store), and are well known for their quick in-store turnaround, allowing for customers to walk in, obtain aneyeglass prescription , select frames, and have their glasses made during a single visit, with about a one-hour wait for construction. They maintain corporate headquarters nearCincinnati ,Ohio , along withSunglass Hut International ; but, in fact, both firms are wholly owned subsidiaries of the Italian-basedLuxottica . Luxottica also owns Pearle, Target Optical, JCPenney Optical, Sears Optical and EyeMed Vision Care.Lenscrafters was the brain child of E. Dean Butler in 1983, a manager with
Procter & Gamble . Mr Butler sold Lenscrafters to the U.S.Shoe Co in 1985 and remained as President until 1987. Bannus(Ban) Hudson replaced Mr. Butler as President and guided Lenscrafters through 1990. Mr Hudson became the CEO of US Shoe in 1990 and Dave Browne became the CEO of Lenscrafters.External links
