Józef Ankwicz (
1750 -9 May 1794 ) ofAwdaniec coat of arms (also kown as "Józef z Posławic" and "Józef Awdaniec") was a politician and noble ("szlachcic ") in thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth . He held the office ofcastellan ofNowy Sącz from 1782. He is known as one of the most prominent collaborators with the partitioners of Poland.Son of

gambler , he quickly fell in debts and was recruited by Russian ambassadorYakov Bulakov [http://serwisy.gazeta.pl/df/1,34471,1822539.html] . In 1782 he received the office ofcastellan ofNowy Sącz . In 1784 he theOrder of the White Eagle fromking of Poland ,Stanisław August Poniatowski , as well as the title ofcount ("hrabia") from Empress ofAustro-Hungary ,Maria Theresa of Austria ; later, he also received the office of Chamberlain at the Austrian court. Deputy to theGreat Sejm and member of thediplomatic mission sent toDenmark in 1791. He was also awarded withOrder of Saint Stanislaus . A close subordinate of Russian ambassadorJacob Sievers , he had many contacts even inSt. Petersburg at the court of Russian EmpressCatherine the Great . For that he was rewarded by his Russian masters with the position in thePermanent Council .During the
Kościuszko Uprising he was captured by the Polish revolutionaries. On the request of Polish Jacobins, he was sentenced tohanging , together with some of the leaders of theTargowica Confederation : Józef Kossakowski,hetman Piotr Ożarowski and hetmanJózef Zabiełło . He was executed on 9 May 1794 inWarsaw , in the aftermath of the Warsaw Uprising, a part of theKościuszko Uprising .References
