Howard Hitchcock

Aside from being Mayor of Geelong, Victoria from 1917 to 1922, philanthropist Howard Hitchcock (1866 to 1932) organized the funding and construction of Australia's Great Ocean Road. [ [http://www.geelongfoundation.org/benefactors Geelong Community Foundation ] at www.geelongfoundation.org] A trust to raise money for the work on the section between Eastern View and Apollo Bay had Councillor Hitchcock as its president. [ [http://www.barwonheads.net/TOWN/gor.HTM Great ocean road ] at www.barwonheads.net] His plan was that the Great Ocean Road would be built by returned soldiers as a memorial to all those who were killed in World War I.
