Elizabeth Crocker Bowers

Elizabeth Crocker Bowers (1830-1895) was an American actress, born at Stamford, Conn. She first appeared on the stage in 1846 at the Park Theatre, New York. The next year she married David P. Bowers, an actor, with whom she went to Philadelphia and remained there until his death in 1857, playing at the Walnut Street and Arch Street theatres. In 1861, after her marriage to Dr. Brown, of Baltimore, she went to London and made a great success as Julia in "The Hunchback", and as Geraldine D'Arcy in "Woman". Returning to New York in 1863, she played for a time at the Winter Garden (now demolished). Among her favorite parts were Juliet, Lady Macbeth, Marie Antoinette, and Lady Audley. After the death of Dr. Brown (in 1867), she married J. C. McCollom, with whom she repeated many of her popular rôles. Her subsequent retirement at Philadelphia was interrupted by a return to the stage in 1886, for several years. Under A. M. Palmer's management she appeared in "Lady Windermere's Fan" (1893), and later she supported Rose Coghlan and Olga Nethersole. She died in Philadelphia where she made her home.
