next_no ="Wake Up Dead Man" is the twelfth and final track from
U2 's 1997 album, "Pop". Similar to "If You Wear That Velvet Dress ", the song was originally written for the "Zooropa " album, but was set aside and then reworked on the next album. One of the band's bleakest songs, it is written as a plea fromBono forJesus Christ to return and fix the world. It is one of few U2 songs to use aprofanity ("I am alone in this world/and a fucked-up world it is, too"). It was played occasionally in the PopMart and Elevation tours, and is featured on ', ', and "" concert films (although all were performed in abbreviated form). The song's title has also been referenced in other works by U2, such as it being written on the cover of "
Zooropa " and in the lyrics of the "Achtung Baby " outtake "Take You Down."Covers
The song has been covered by
Maria João on her "Undercovers" album in 2002.
