Poshekhonye

Poshekhonye ( _ru. Пошехо́нье) is a town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, located km to mi|151 north-west of Yaroslavl. It stands on the Sogozha River (although now the river valley is flooded by the Rybinsk Reservoir). Population: ru-census2002|6973|.

It was founded as village Pertoma ( _ru. Пертома) in the 17th century. In 1777, it was granted town status and renamed Poshekhonye. In 1918, the town was renamed Poshekhonye-Volodarsk ( _ru. Пошехо́нье-Волода́рск), after V. Volodarsky. It bore that name until 1992, when it regained its old name of Poshekhonye.

A popular variety of mass-produced cheese in Russia is called "Poshekhonsky". The original cheese factory in the city is currently no longer operating, although the plans of the governor of Yaroslavl Oblast include reopening it.
